2020 Chateau Seraphine - It has an expressive bouquet of blackberry, violets, fig and light truffle scents, all well-defined and quintessentially Pomerol. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry, delivering fine-grained tannins and very well-judged acidity that lends tension and poise. Smooth in texture, it gains weight and grip toward the finish, completing one of the best Séraphine to date. Superb. 94/100 points

This is the inaugural vintage of a new wine, Didacus Rosso made with Cabernet Franc, that partners up perfectly to the white version of Didacus, which showcases Chardonnay. The Planeta 2016 Sicilia Menfí Cabernet Franc Didacus works a little harder to win you over compared to its white wine sibling that proves to be an eìortless, love-at-írst-sight proposition. From a classic vintage and a long growing season, this Cabernet Franc is slow to open and reveals a long range of aromas to coincide with various intervals one hour after the bottle is open, six hours later and even two days later. Give it time. Didacus reveals textbook varietal purity with dark fruit, bramble, white pepper, crushed stone and rosemary essence. There is little sweetness to the fruit, and the wine's personality embraces a more tonic or focused style with inner tension and verve. It focuses on length, not textural width. Compared to the Chardonnay, which is full-on Mediterranean with a kaleidoscope of bold fruit intensity, this wine is more reserved and timid. It adopts the silent, noble and insular side of the Sicilian persona and is a wine that succinctly relays its intention and uses few words to do so.

Could Schalk-Willem Joubert do it again in 2019 after such an impressive maiden release? You bet he could and he has even improved on that predecessor. This is more precise and nuanced, presenting a seamless assemblage of Cabernet Franc with 26% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the windy western corner of the Helderberg. Complex, layered and restrained, with perfumed 35% new wood, graphite, red berry, blackcurrant leaf and tarragon flavours and fresh, sea breeze-kissed finish. 2024-35

This is a classy and resonant wine with intensity and focus, coupled with serious balance, refinement and actively challenging tannins with layer after layer of tender black fruit and brittle acidity. An intriguing wild cherry perfume signals a wine of intent, and when the palate takes over, it is a measured performance where the elements act together without any over-enthusiastic ingredients breaking from the pack and ruining the precise symmetry found on the palate. Nothing is rushed, and everything is polished, making this an elite wine in a legendary vintage.

I like the Assyrtiko grape enormously, but I have only ever tasted a handful of what I would term ‘serious’ versions, and this is not one. Serious wines are sometimes fun, but mostly they require too much thought, and I tend to get bored halfway through and open another bottle of something a little more delicious and a little less demanding. Julia is a complex and engaging wine, and it is also delicious, but there is no pretence here. What you see is what you get, and for £18.50, you get a lot of refinement and excitement. I knew nothing about this estate until I looked it up on the PC website, and it was then that I discovered why this is not a ‘serious wine’ but a downright delicious and intricately assembled one. Florent Dumeau (of Aristea, Clos Cantenac and Château Séraphine fame – all regulars on matthewjukes.com) consults here, and this fellow does not miss a trick. He has nailed the art of making every wine he casts his spell on seem effortless and mesmerising while retaining its critical deliciousness gene. I had no idea he had connections in Greece, and I cannot recommend this wine enough because he has tempered and honed Assyrtiko’s exuberance, and the result is a modern work of art.

Very much a challenger to the Cru Classé of the Cotes de Provence. This has a lovely chalky freshness and verticality. Cool summer Merlot. Dense and compact; ultra-fresh; diaphanous. Very gentle at first, with just a hint of chalk tannin bringing additional interest and definition. Serious, substantial and long with a signature grapefruit freshness. Viscous and concentrated through the dense mid-palate. This could almost be a white tasted blind (only the trace of tannin and the slightly viscous salinity really give it away). I love the searing intensity and depth. Wonderfully serious. Very substantial and unlike many of the wines tasted here, this has a tightly and brilliantly defined frame and a lovely sense of structure. Rosé vin de garde.

A New varietal Syrah, the 2018 Palomar de La Reina was produced with grapes from a vineyard planted around the pigeon house that queen Isabel I de Castilla (Isabel La Catolica) donated to La Mejorada in the 15th Century. The wine has a strong varietal profile with intense aromas of smoked bacon, olives, violets and tar, quite nothern Rhone-ish, a tad riper and juicer, salty rather than sweet, with reminiscences of brine and iodine. I was very impressed by this wine, its expressive, aromatic and open. It's medium to full.bodied and very lively on the palate with great freshness and pungent flavors, very fine tannins and a long finish.

The Last Elephant is Merlot based with 52 % Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Focused and well balanced, with scented 30% new wood, mint, cassis and dark chocolate flavours and a cut grass undertone. 2023/30
